“ La
Palmera” Christian School
This ministry is the
major component of “La Palmera” CCC
community work. Its main purpose is to defeat in the name of the
Lord Jesus, ignorance and inequality of opportunities in a country
highly marked by its poverty, social class and gender discrimination.
Initially, this ministry provided an opportunity for children
attending the local public school to have access to educational
reinforcement and encouragement in their schooling process. Schools
in Bolivia suffer critical infrastructure needs and run under severe
political struggles that perpetuate a vicious circle of educational
mediocrity creating a horrendous rate of school desertion and national
illiteracy that put Bolivia amongst the most educationally neglected
country in the world.
This programme
offered to children in primary school assistance in their school
homework, access to small library of reference books, ludic educational
activities, personal development assemblies, excursions and organized
visits to places of interest.
The activities
were planned in such a way that all families in the neighborhood
interested in enrolling their children in the program will find
it absolutely friendly. People in Bolivia are used to only four
hours of schooling daily with boys attending in the morning and
girls in the afternoon, and most families give their children lots
of responsibilities at home that condition their development (i.e.:
babysitting, housekeeping, washing & ironing, selling homemade
produce in the streets, etc.). Therefore, we had a session in the
morning for girls and another in the afternoon for boys. On Saturdays
all of them came together in the morning for a special program 100%
Christian & Bible centered aimed to provide to the children
the larger picture of God’s plan for their lives thru schooling.
We promoted
education for life instead of education for social status. We also
committed ourselves to compensate for the historical marginalization
of women from education in the Latin American society, by giving
to girls a higher chance of succeeding in their schooling with our
enthusiastic support. Another commitment we took was to provide
to children the right to enjoy a minimum of 200 days of schooling
yearly in a country where 100 days or less was acceptable due to
the laboral conflicts of very poorly paid teachers.
These promotions
and commitments led us to materialize a dream, our own school! With
the assistance of Dr. Louvenia Gafney, a specialist on primary education
from North Carolina, USA, and a young team of newly graduated educationalists
from UK & USA, we launched this new project in 1996, initially
providing education to children from 6-9 years old and upgrading
each year our services until completing the full National requirements
for Primary education, and with plans to develop a Secondary Section
& Technical College.
Today, we provide primary
education to 300 children from 5-14 years old and we are the
only Evangelical private school in town
free of cost for poor families, and with special services like
textbooks, school lunch, camps & special events plus a schedule
of 8 hours of schooling daily in a Christ-centred environment and
with a Bible-based curricula.
