Lucho and Lorna Velez

“La Palmera” Christian Cultural Center

Since Lucho and Lorna Velez launched their community development missionary work in Trinidad-Beni, Bolivia, they have teamed with their neighbors under continually progressing banners as “ San Jose Zone Project”, “Children & Families Community Project” and “La Palmera” Christian Cultural Center (CCC). This ministry has grown in two decades to be a leading developmental Christian Brethren missionary work, Bolivia-based, expressing the biblical ethos of Psalm 92:12-15 “The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree (Spanish= palmera)”. We genuinely acknowledge this growth made possible by the grace of God and the prayers and efforts of supporters and field staff committed to preaching the Gospel of Jesus in work and word.

Successful planning and leadership has produced the first Christian community center in the Bolivian Amazon region featuring an educational center, health centre, recreational center, discipleship center and an independent church serving a continually growing neighborhood as a fourfold community development unit.

“La Palmera” C.C.C. has trained many of its Bolivian neighbours in the administration and provision of services to its beneficiaries, creating jobs for the community, promoting trust in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and encouraging the expansion of Christian witness beyond its sphere of influence.

“La Palmera” CCC celebrates achievements such as registering from a group of 100 children enrolled in its services two decades ago, 95 trusting the Lord, 60 being baptized with their parents’ consent, 45 as current members of the church, 25 attending university, 12 already graduated as professionals of Law, Civil Engineering, Medical Sciences, Accountancy, Theology, etc and 8 Christian married young couples. These results are in a country where out of 1000 children starting Primary 1 only 6 finish university, 2 get a proper job, most won’t have any spiritual input in their lives.

“La Palmera” CCC has developed its premises in a very strategic corner of the town on 1.25 acres of land bought from its neighbors in a chain of miracle stories. These premises provide room for school classrooms, offices and recreational space, room for hospitality, cooking and food serving facilities, community and church meeting place, pastoral housing and even a small zoo!

“La Palmera” has been reported in the national media an exemplary community development project and in 1996 the current Bolivian president’s wife Sra. Ximena Iturralde de Sanchez de Lozada, visited the Center to express the government's gratitude for our private initiative in bringing blessing to the Bolivian people highlighting the enormous benefits of sponsoring contributions through evangelical Christian churches and developmental missionary work, and offering all possible support to our activities.

“La Palmera” CCC has been visited by more than 250 people, sponsors & short term volunteers from eight different countries, who have been of great encouragement to its work.
